He started his career as a newspaper cartoonist, with such features as 'Catfish', 'Funny Business' and 'Animal Crackers'. The latter was his most famous comics creation. It dealt with a group of animals who live in a fictional jungle, and has been syndicated since 1967. Two collections of the Animal Crackers series have appeared: 'It's a Jungle Out There and 'Save the Dodos!'
