The mystery involves a submerged car with a figure inside, and leads the boys on a chase in a racing car. They also encounter a bumbling Chief of Police.
The story is narrated by Jimmy Carson, the more average of the two young detectives. Brains Benton, the "brains" of the operation, is a young genius with a hidden laboratory in his garage.
