“Greetings from staging in Las Cruces, New Mexico from the Air Bnb Casita de Sueños! I’m a preloved, in good condition, Morton’s Black Rabbit Fur Capelet, one-size-fits-most. The only flaw is a small patch on back, where the fur is slightly matted (see photo).
Morton's opened in 1933 and would operate for 60 years. They were some of the first stores in D.C. to integrate its facilities, including hiring African American salespeople & managers, as well as integrating dressing rooms & restrooms.
This piece has the initials B.H.A inside. Initials were put in Morton's fur coats as a monogram to personalize and identify the coat. Fur coats were often expensive, luxurious items, and embroidering the owner's initials in the lining was a common, fashionable practice.
Plus, it was customary to check coats at restaurants, clubs, and other venues. Since many people owned similar fur coats, a monogram prevented mix-ups with other patrons.”
