This union case is embellished with geometric scroll patterns. The frame case has a ruby ambrotype photo of a gentleman. He is from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The case is the union style. Samuel Peck and Alfred Critchlow developed this type of case production in the early 1850s, and it was known as the "Florence Compound." Peck and Halverson were the primary producers of this geometric design. (Although, I have another case, which is larger, for sale that was made by Littlefield Parsons and Co...) This has smooth hinges that open and close without issue. The clasp works and keeps the case securely closed. The engravings are detailed. The case has a velvet pillow cushion with a geometric design and an oval, gold gilt looking frame, glass the the photo. The manufacturer has labeled it as "GENUINE/ UNION CASE,/ IMPROVED/ FINE GILT AND BURNISHED/ HINGE./ S. PECK & CO.,/ MANUFACTURERS." Based on the red transparent photo, it *looks to be taken as a ruby ambrotype*.
