Vintage (circa 1980s-early 1990s) set of 2 Handmade Japanese Chirimen Silk Relief Art Pieces
1) First collage dimensional relief piece is of a geisha, made layering chirimen silk fabrics and brocade textiles.
She is holding a paddle (Hagoita) used in a Japanese New Year's game called Hanetsuki. When a shuttlecock is hit using this paddle, it is thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck in the New Year.
2) Iris flowers symbolize renewal in Japanese culture. These were made by layering multi- colored silk crepe fabrics over a gold foil fan shaped background
The set together is thought to bring favor and good fortune to a home.
Each has a fabric mat and the original red silk cords to facilitate wall hanging
Large round black plastic frames with thin glass cover (typical in Japanese stores at the time)
MEASUREMENTS: height 17.5", width 17.5"
Excellent preowned vintage condition
Providence is Japan but do not know specifics like where these pieces were sold (store, exact prefecture)
