Vintage 1970s Pattachitra Painting – Goddess Durga Slaying Mahishasura
Size: estimated 15" x 12"
This is a striking vintage Pattachitra painting from the 1970s, depicting Goddess Durga in her fierce form as Mahishasuramardini, slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura. A powerful representation of good triumphing over evil, this artwork captures a classic narrative from Hindu mythology.
Origin & Style:
This piece is from the traditional Pattachitra art form of Odisha, India. Known for its intricate detail, bold natural colors, and religious themes, Pattachitra paintings are created on cloth treated with tamarind seed paste and powdered chalk for durability. The style features ornamental borders, mythological storytelling, and a vibrant palette.

This piece belonged to my mother-in-law, who lived in India for seven years during the early 1980s. It was part of her meditation room decor and has traveled from India to Germany, and now resides in the United States.
