This is a vintage Italian Majolica lobster clam shell dish, likely from Bassano, Italy, a well-known center for Majolica pottery. (Majolica is defined by its distinctive combination of a red earthenware body, an opaque white tin glaze, and colorful, painted designs that are fused to the surface through a second firing process.) It features a distinctive blue lobster design in high relief on a white, oval-shaped ceramic dish, with a shell or clam-like texture.
This style of dish is commonly associated with the mid-century period, particularly the 1950s, however this one may date earlier given its distinction from similar dishes. It functions as a decorative or serving dish, ideal for seafood or as a unique piece of home decor.
The lobster on this plate has rough ridges on top as seen in photos. These appear intentional so as to look more "lobster-like" rather than damage to the lobster, however it's difficult to be certain. There are several places that I believe might be representative of damage as both the style of pottery and age can affect this (see photos).
This particular plate is slightly different and seemingly older than other similar plates I can find. Even the label on the base is different to some degree (Italy 1605 with no additional marks).
Please review all photos as they are part of the description.
