Virginia T. Romero was a prominent Taos potter who helped to keep micaceous pottery alive in the Taos region. Micaceous clay has a beautiful distinctive shimmer that comes from its high mica content (see photo). In recent years collectors and museums have recognized these pots for their artistic value and have sought out Romero’s work in particular. Romero, born in 1896, started potting in 1919 to support her family and continued until her death in 1998.
This charming little dish has a braided handle and is signed on the bottom “Virginia T Romero Taos Pueblo NM”. It measures 5.5 inches long and 2.5 inches tall and is in excellent condition with just some discoloration from when it was fired (see photos). These marks are known as ‘fire clouds’ and enhance the beauty of the hand-made piece.
