In the 13th century, the Venetian government ordered all glassmakers to relocate to Murano, an island in the Venetian lagoon, to reduce fire risks in Venice and protect the valuable trade secrets of glass production. For 800 years, the name Murano has been synonymous with the highest quality, hand-blown colored glass.
Flavio Poli (1900-1984) designed stunning Murano glass for several glassmakers. He was known particularly for strong glass colors and for the ‘Sommerso’ technique where different colors of molten glass were ‘submerged’ into each other. This particular vase is a rare triple ‘Sommerso’ with red, blue, and purple glass submerged into a shell of clear glass.
Four oval panels have been cut into the sides which gives the vase a very modern look. This vintage vase measures 5 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide. It is in excellent used condition with just some light wear on the bottom and a few light light scuffs one of the side panels.
