Lillian Vernon was a German-American businesswoman who founded the mail-order catalog company, the Lillian Vernon Corporation, in 1951. While not exclusively making plates, her company specialized in selling unique, personalized, and often low-cost gifts, including homeware like plates, to a large customer base through catalogs and later, online. She was a pioneer in the mail-order industry and known for her entrepreneurial drive.
Early career: Vernon started her business with $2,000 of her wedding money, initially selling personalized purses and belts through advertisements in magazines, according to Immigrant Entrepreneurship.
Company expansion: The business grew into a mail-order empire that specialized in unique, often monogrammed, items. Her first catalog was launched in 1956, and her company became one of the first businesses founded by a woman to be publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange in 1987.
