"Vitreous" refers to a glass-like state, and in the context of porcelain, it means the clay body has fused together at high temperatures, resulting in low water absorption (less than 3%).
"Semi-vitreous" porcelain, on the other hand, absorbs more moisture (3% to 7%) because it's fired at a lower temperature than fully vitreous porcelain.
