Tun Tavern was built in Philadelphia by Samuel Carpenter in 1683, along the edge of the Delaware River. The term "tun" describes "a measured cask" of brew, and only "master brewers" were permitted to use and display the symbol of the Tun. On November 10, 1775, The Continental Congress authorized the raising of two battalions of seafaring militia for service in the upcoming revolution against England. These "soldiers of the sea" were known as the Continental Marines, later named the United States Marine Corps. The Continental Marines were recruited by newly commissioned Major Samuel Nicholas, known as the first Commandant, and Captain Robert Mullen, son of Tun Tavern proprietors Thomas and Peggy Mullen. By 1782 Tun Tavern, in disrepair and nearly a century old, was demolished to make way for the "Merchants Warehouse." Since 1989, the Marine Corps Tun Tavern Foundation is dedicated to rebuilding Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Each year, 3 million former and active duty Marines around the world celebrate November 10 as the birth date of their proud tradition...and Tun Tavern as its birthplace. Inventory: BXD
