During their travels, they encounter new survivors, including Tyreese, his daughter Julie, and her boyfriend Chris, who join their ranks. They briefly find what appears to be a safe haven in a gated community, but this quickly proves to be a false sense of security. The core of this volume revolves around the group's arrival at a seemingly idyllic farm owned by Hershel Greene and his family. Hershel, a veterinarian, holds a controversial view of the "walkers," believing they are merely sick individuals who can be cured, and he keeps several of his zombified family members locked in a barn. This leads to significant conflict and ethical dilemmas within Rick's group, culminating in a violent confrontation when the barn is opened, unleashing the walkers.
