The Sting (1973) plot follows young grifter Johnny Hooker (Redford) who teams up with master con man Henry Gondorff (Newman) in 1936 Chicago to get revenge on the ruthless mob boss Doyle Lonnegan (Shaw) who murdered Hooker's partner for a botched con; they orchestrate a massive "Big Con" using a fake betting parlor and a fake FBI raid to swindle Lonnegan out of a fortune, culminating in a shocking reveal that the entire elaborate scheme was itself a "sting" to get Lonnegan without violence, leaving him ruined and the grifters triumphant.
