The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd is a coming-of-age story set in 1964 South Carolina. It follows 14-year-old Lily Owens, who lives with her abusive father and is haunted by the death of her mother. After an incident where Rosaleen, her Black housekeeper, is arrested, Lily and Rosaleen escape to Tiburon, where they are taken in by three eccentric Black beekeeping sisters. Lily is introduced to a world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna, and the sisters help her find a sense of belonging and understand the loss and healing she has experienced.
