Multicolored, Carved, & dyed Tagua nut stretchy bracelet. Aka. vegetable ivory. Made from very hard white endosperm of seeds of certain palm trees. Natural seed sourced from Tagua palm tree, native to tropical rainforest of South America. Rich history dating back centuries. Hardness & workability makes it ideal for carving intricate ornaments. Collectors value unique texture.
Because its naturally durable & similar to elephant ivory, Tagua nut has been used to make wide variety of household objects. Before advent of plastics, garment industry used Tagua nut to make buttons. Historically, Tagua was also fashioned into chess pieces, Cane handles & dice.
Several tropical American palms produce vegetable ivory, but 1 of most important is Ecuadorian Ivory Palm. Main source of Ecuadorian Tagua, a botanical alternative to ivory.
In Ecuador, nuts inside fruit used to make buttons, jewelry & statues, our Tagua nut powder is a by-product of this craft. Remaining nut pieces saved & ground to produce natural, biodegradable scrub.
