Early 20th century, use of Tagua Nut reached its peak. 1920s - made up about 20% of all buttons in US & US Army used for uniform buttons. Used for chess pieces, Dominos & Cane handles. 1940s-1950s: w/development of cheaper plastics, demand declined significantly. 1980s: Resurgence in popularity due to conservation efforts. Bands on ivory trade in late 1980s & early 1990s, Eco-conscience consumers sought out sustainable & ethical alternatives.
