The Five "Civilized" Tribes: Several Southeastern Native American nations—the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole—were influenced by European settler practices and owned African slaves. At the same time, escaped slaves sometimes sought refuge and formed alliances with Native American tribes. The Black Seminoles are a prominent example of Afro-Indigenous identity, formed by formerly enslaved Africans and free Black people who allied with the Seminole people in Florida. They created independent communities and fought alongside the Seminoles in armed resistance against the U.S. during the Seminole Wars.
