The album is a return to the group's more blues-oriented approach that was prominent in the pre-Aftermath (1966) period of their career and features a guest appearance by the legendary Ry Cooder. The album reached Top-10 positions in several markets, including reaching #1 in the UK and #3 in the US. While no high-charting singles were released from the album, many of its iconic songs became staples of Rolling Stones live shows and on rock radio stations, including 'Gimme Shelter' and 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', both of which frequently appear on lists of the greatest songs ever. Certified Double Platinum in the US, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and is on various iterations of Rolling Stone magazine's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.
