This box was likely made in Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley, an area known to produce these lacquered papier-mâché handicrafts. They are made in India, but thought to have come over from Persia (lots to read on that). Many are attributed to Suffering Moses, but as there is only sticker residue on the bottom, we will never know the true origin of this box. I have had it since the 1980s or 1990s. To me, it looks like a starry night in the forest, with antlered deer, hares and another animal I can't identify. It's condition is great/EUC, with very little wear. It has a beautiful sheen and the fauna are various rich shades of brown, red and gray, the flora in green, brown and some red, all set against a deep blue backdrop of what I see as the night sky full of golden stars. The golden color also outlines the trees and box halves.
