This lovely gourd was created by renowned New Mexico artist John Schaefer. It is both signed by the artist, and numbered. There are traditional design elements around the top opening of the gourd, and the interior is painted black as are the outlines and details of the creatures. Each of this artist's designs are taken from traditional southwestern indian designs. His gourds are painted to look like stoneware or pottery. If you collect items from this artist or other artists that specialize in painting gourds, this is a lovely piece for your collection. A great decorator piece -- an heirloom. There are no chips or cracks. There are 2 light white marks on the one smiling creature (see photo). I don’t know if it will wash off as I haven’t wanted to do anything to damage it.
