Unlike their simple, medieval counterparts, latter English carols were formal and didactic. As caroling flourished throughout the early 1900s, this formality gradually disappeared. The most popular Christmas carols originated in France, Germany and the United States during the 1800s. France contributed Angels We Have Heard on High, while Germany produced Silent Night, Holly Night and Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming.
