This Smithsonian Series tie tac is a unique adaptation of a commemorative type of button crafted to honor the inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States in 1789. Made from pewter, the tie tac showcases intricate craftsmanship with the President's initials beautifully incised in script within the center circle. Surrounding this are the raised capital letters forming the inscription "Long Live the President" arranged in an elegant chain of thirteen links, each representing the original states of the union. There's a push-on clasp with attached chain and bar on back -- not sure if it's original -- looks like silverplate. Comes in the original presentation box with story on the inside of lid.
-- 3/4" in diameter and marked on back.
-- Great vintage condition. Box shows minor expected storage wear and some light soil as shown.
A collectible piece of historical Americana, this tie tac not only serves as a functional accessory but also as a symbol of early American heritage and presidential legacy.
