"Born in the frothing white foam of the sea, Mekkala possesses a crystal ball which shoots out flashes of blinding light: these flashes appear to human beings as lightning. She uses this crystal to protect herself from her pursuer, the thunder spirit Ramasun (Ramasura) whose axe is responsible for the thunderous roars that follow each flash of lightning."
