Silver Album: The Real-Life Dracula - Prince Vlad and the Order of the Dragon
Following the tumultuous Battle of Kosovo in 1389, Sigismund of Luxembourg, the King of Hungary and Croatia, solidified his legacy. In 1408, he founded the Order of the Dragon, a covert society aimed at defending against the Turks. Among its notable members was Vlad II, the Prince of Wallachia, in Transylvania. Upon joining the Order in 1431, Vlad II received a new name: DRACUL, meaning dragon in Romanian. His son inherited this title, leading to Vlad III being known as Son of the Dragon—or DRACULA.
This silver denar was struck during Sigismund's rule, the founder of the Order of the Dragon. The Crusader cross on the reverse serves as a renowned symbol among the Order's members. Interestingly, Vlad III Dracula never minted his own coins, further fueling the myth that silver poses a threat to vampires.
