The children initially try to stop him, but the cat's antics escalate, involving balancing acts and the introduction of two chaotic creatures, Thing One and Thing Two. The story culminates in a massive mess, but the Cat in the Hat then uses a machine to clean everything up just before their mother returns home. The book ends with the children questioning what they would do in a similar situation.
