Set of 2 Vintage Hollywood Regency Terracotta Elephant Candleholders/Bookends
This is a beautiful set of 2 vintage opposing elephant figures designed in the Hollywood Regency-Mid-Century Chinoiserie style (c. 1950s-1970s). They are perfect for adding a touch of exotic glamour, bold color, and maximalist appeal to any room.
Design & Function:
These ceramic elephants, commonly used as candleholders, bookends, or decorative plant stands, feature an ornate caparison (blanket) and stand on a decorative, square platform. The platform includes a distinct indentation at the top, perfectly suited to hold votive candles, tea lights, or small pillar candles.
Materials & Glazing:
The pieces are crafted from terracotta/earthenware and covered in a vibrant, high-gloss low-fire ceramic glaze, reminiscent of traditional Chinese Sancai pottery. The rich color palette includes:
Aqua/Turquoise Green
Creamy White
Contrasting Deep Blue and Mustard Yellow/Orange details.
The elephants stand on a rough, unglazed base, revealing the terracotta body.
Approximate Measurements (Each):
Height: 6 & 1/2 inches
Length: 7 & 1/2 inches
Width: 3 & 1/4 inches
Condition:
Overall good vintage condition with wear present commensurate with age. There is some crazing in the glaze and a large, shallow crack up one of the elephant trunks (not structurally compromised). Minor scratches, scuffs, and/or marks may be present. Please thoroughly review all available pictures. Thanks!
