It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, needs a support structure like a trellis or fence to climb, and is often grown as an annual in most climates. The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions and is known for attracting pollinators like moths. Seeds can be started in the spring. To speed up germination, nick the seed with a file or soak it in lukewarm water for a few hours before planting. Transplant seedlings outdoors once the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed. The vines grow very quickly, especially in heat. It is resistant to deer. The flowers are best enjoyed in the garden and do not perform well as cut flowers. After flowering, harvest the seed pods when the husk turns black.
