The Chadwick family went into a small shop on Adelaide Street, Penzance, which sold traditional workwear, such as fishermen's smocks, Guernsey pullovers, and stripey tops. They only went in to buy some waterproof coats, but ended up buying the shop as well. Our customers in those days were the sailors, farmers, and fishermen of the area, and quite a few of the St Ives artists came in as well. Those early days have really influenced how our products look today. TIN CLOTH Tin cloth is a tightly woven cotton duck canvas that has been saturated with wax under high pressure and heat. For raincoats, this process creates a material that is highly water-resistant, durable, and provides excellent protection against the elements. The "tin" name comes from its resemblance to the hard, sturdy toughness of the metal. The waxed canvas technique was pioneered by early sailors and later refined with wax instead of fish oils. In the 1920s, companies like Filson began using this fabric for working-class outerwear and military gear. Today, tin cloth is a popular material for rugged outerwear from heritage brands like Filson, including their iconic Cruiser jackets and other rain-resistant gear.
