TITLE: View of Kodiak
Helen J. Simeonoff's watercolor interpretation is taken from an old photograph entitled "View of Pavlovskii Harbor from the North, 1798" attributed to James Shields.
Shields original drawing would have been sketched from Pillar Mountain looking down into Kodiak harbor and across to Near Island. The first 10g cabin with a small "x" , gray roof, near
the harbor front is where Helen's grandfather she called "Dedo" (W1111am Simeonoff, Sr.) built his first 10g cabin. He lived there with his wife who was Irene Panamaroff. The first Russian Orthodox Church sits atop the hill where the Anderson family lived before the 1964 earthquake.
The old city jail was also located in this area. At one time there was a small lake in downtown Kodiak with a small creek running near the same area. Helen remembers as a child playing on the sandbar when the tide was out where the boat harbor is now Located. This historical scene includes the Shelikhov Fur Trading Company buildings, barracks, storehouses, workshops, and residences.
Helen Jane Simeonoff is Koniag (Alutiiq) born in Kodiak, Alaska to Alutiiq-Russian parents.
Helen's watercolors are often bright, colorful, cheerful and playful. The watercolor reproductions are in standard 11"x14" mats, opening size of 8"x10". The mats fit any standard size 11"x14" frame.
