Mexican Sandstone Pottery Folk Art Cobalt Blue Tonala Style Mexico Ceramic Bird EUC
This charming vintage Mexican Tonalaware corcho bird has been made in the form of a plump quail looking back over its shoulder. The quail has been decorated with blue, brown and black enamel accents on its plumage and features a large beautifully painted traditional Flor de Tonalá motif on its breast and neck. Its head and beak also bear enamel accents. The underside carries an old hand painted manufacturer mark reading "Netzi" along with "MEX"
The quail is in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It should be noted that there are production related irregularities and natural anomalies in the surface of the ceramic including some linear marks that do not detract from the appearance of the piece and are noted for accuracy. The bird stands 6" as measured to its tallest point and is 5.25" from the front of the breast to the back of the tail. It is 4" across at the widest point of the body. The bird weighs in at just over 1lb.
This lovely hand painted quail would be a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage Tonala pottery or works well as a stand alone decorative accent. An appealing piece!
