The icon depicts Saint Ludmila of Bohemia, a significant figure in Czech history and a revered saint in both the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches
Saint Ludmila (c. 860 – 921 AD) was a Slavic princess who married Duke Bořivoj, the first recorded ruler of the Přemyslid Dynasty in Bohemia.
She and her husband converted to Christianity around 871 AD and became active proponents of the faith during a period of pagan resistance.
Ludmila was martyred in 921 AD, likely due to a conspiracy by her daughter-in-law, Drahomíra. She is notably recognized for raising and educating her grandson, Saint Wenceslas, in Christian principles.
Saint Ludmila is venerated as a patron saint of Bohemia, the Czech Republic, educators, and widows, and is also invoked against in-law problems.
Her life and martyrdom are celebrated in various cultural works, including Antonín Dvořák's oratorio "Saint Ludmila," and she remains a symbol of Czech national identity.
