SU "Trigger Warning: POLAROID" Horror Club Concept Art - Lars & Ronaldo

I worked on Steven Universe as a writer and storyboard artist for the original series on Cartoon Network. These concept drawings go back to the creation of "Beach City Horror Club," where I was working out Ronaldo and Lars's previous history together. One thing that was important to me here was that I thought we had the opportunity to depict a person (Lars) as someone who had been struggling with depression and mental illness since a very young age. Unfortunate, though it is, children can and do struggle with painful realities. It's only exacerbated by the isolation provided by televison/media, which often depicts childhood as something pristine, devoid of the hardships and heaviness that face an adult life.
