Salvador Dali was born in 1904 in Figueres, Spain and gravitated early on toward cubism before becoming one of the greatest surrealist painters ever. He became as well known for his eccentric behavior (and upturned mustache) as he was for his paintings of melting clocks. In his later years, Dali moved away from surrealism and his paintings were more imbued with mysticism and symbolism. His health declined in his early 80’s and he passed away in his hometown, Figueres in 1989.
In 1967, Dali created 12 paintings representing the Signs of the Zodiac. In 1969, Penn Prints, New York released a portfolio of 12 lithographs, each measuring 14x18 inches. This is the lithograph for the zodiac sign Capricorn (December 22 - January 19). It is a fanciful representation of a Sea-Goat - a mythical creature that symbolizes the ability to navigate both the material world (the goat) and the emotional or spiritual realms (the fish). The lithograph has been matted to approximately 18 x 22 inches and is hinged onto a piece of board by one piece of tape at the top (see photo). The lithograph is in excellent condition with no tears or repairs.
