"Whoever heard of a rooster for a pet!" jeers Gary, the boy next door, when he sees Darlan and his pet rooster, Rudolph. Well, a rooster may be an unusual pet, but for Darlan he's better than a cat or dog- Soon, the little black boy followed by the red rooster becomes a familiar sight in town.
Darlan and Rudolph are the best of friends. They have something in common - they both know how it feels to be "different."
Rudolph is an outcast. Before becoming Darlan's pet, he was the only red rooster in a flock of white chickens at the Harper Poultry Farm and, consequently, hated and attacked by them.
Darlan, too, is rejected. He and his mother are new residents in a formerly all-white neighborhood. The neighbors make it plain that they don't like him because he is a Negro, and the other boys make fun of him because he won`t play baseball with them (they don't know that he is allergic to the dust on the play- ground).
In the end, it is Rudolph who leads the neighbors to realize that differences such as race are unimportant, and that Darlan has the same feelings and hopes as all little boys, And what's more, Rudolph proves that even a chicken can be a hero!
