The Roses of Heliogabalus by Lawrence Alma-Tadema is an 1888 painting depicting a lavish banquet where a teenage Roman emperor, Heliogabalus, releases a torrent of rose petals from a false ceiling, smothering unsuspecting guests and causing some to suffocate. The painting shows a decadent scene of pink petals cascading over dining onlookers, with the emperor watching from a platform, representing a deadly spectacle hidden beneath the beautiful surface. The work was inspired by an anecdote from the Historia Augusta and captures the decadence and cruelty of the period for a contemporary Victorian audience.
