Preowned hand painted collectable reverse painting on clear glass made in Germany, circa 1950's.
A collectable reverse glass art painting framed in light wood frame measuring 7" x 9" and is ready to hang or display.
The subject is a Hummel style painting of a child sitting on a mushroom dome mostly in black and light pastel colors. Very sweet and an original marked on the back Made in Germany, and sold by August Wilhelm of Augsburg Germany who had an import export business There is a signature stamp on the middle back.
The painting itself is done by an unknown artist but the quality of the paint and sealer has held up nicely. The glass or painting itself is not damaged and has been carefully cleaned and returned to the original off white backing for the frame. The original backing shows some discoloration from age.lThis is easily changeable.
Reverse glass painting goes back centuries but flourished between 1550 and 1850. Originally an exquisite form of art created by master craftsmen for the wealthy, it later became a folk art genre from the second half of the 18th century onwards when glass became a less expensive material. In its simplified form reverse glass painting became widespread and was incredibly popular thanks to its attractive, bright colors and the shimmer of the glass.
