The finest artificial glass eyes were of French or German manufacture. Physicians or occultists delicately fitted patients from manufacture’s trial samples - first by form and then matched for color. An artificial glass eye of superior craftsmanship was then special ordered to offer the patient lifelike color, brilliancy of expression, and accuracy of form. Fitted properly over an injured blind, but not fully atrophied eye, the prosthesis eye could move in concert with the good eye. These glass eyes were expensive in the late 19th century, making them affordable only to more prominent patients. This glass is in two layers of glass (front and back - makes it hollow) keeping it light in weight. This glass eye is not a later synthetic / plastic eye. circa 1880.
This glass eye (adult size - 15/16 inches wide) is an excellent addition to your collection of items relating to medicine or optometry - see all 15 photos. This early glass eye is a 'hard to find'. One can just enjoy it as part of ones collection or use it in a number of creative ideas, including the making of jewelry. Guaranteed authentic.
