Outstanding and likely unique World War I trench-art goblet, entirely hand-fabricated from repurposed heavy brass—almost certainly salvaged ordnance metal.
The construction is unmistakably field-made: hand-hammered surfaces, irregular solder joins, file finishing, and tool marks throughout. This is not a cast souvenir, but a true bench-made artifact created by a skilled artisan or serviceman during or immediately following the Great War in the China–Burma–India / Indochina region.
• Era: World War I (circa 1914–1919)
• Origin: Indochina or China–Burma–India region
• Material: Brass / bronze alloy with faint silver-wash remnants
• Dimensions: 7 in (17.8 cm) height × 3.25 in (8.3 cm) base diameter
• Weight: 13.1 oz (≈372 g)
• Condition: Authentic age patina with small dings, minor oxidation, and uneven solder seams consistent with trench-art handwork. Structurally solid and stable. Displays beautifully.
• Provenance: Estate find; stylistically consistent with early 20th-century Asian-theater trench art, possibly British-Indian or French colonial servicemen’s work.
Highlights:
• 100% hand-forged and hand-chased WWI-era brass
• Figural base of an Asian scholar with pipe — rarely seen in trench art
• Deeply engraved floral and crane motifs on the upper globe
• Visible hammer and file marks throughout — authentic bench-made wartime creation
• Distinctly non-European subject matter, aligning with colonial and CBI campaigns
