Here is a rare vintage from the 1980s Meenakari butterfly pendant/necklace by Monet. It hangs on a round snake chain. There is some wearing to the gold tone finish on the back of the butterfly and at the ends of the chain where the rings are. Otherwise it is in good condition. This is from my mom’s estate. I’m sure she never wore it, just collected it.
Meenakari is a traditional art form that involves decorating metal with enamel. The history of Meenakari finds its beginning in Persia. In the sixteen century, during the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s rule, a member of his court introduced this art form. Initially, the royal workers used Meenakari artwork to adorn palace walls, ceilings and doors but gradually, at the request of the emperor’s wife, artisans started crafting jewelry out of it as well. Many mistake Meenakari for Cloisonné.
The butterfly is 2” by 2”. The chain has a 7 ¾” hang.
It is signed Monet on the tag near the fastener.
See pics.
I can't find this butterfly anywhere.
