For the serious German stein and Westerwald pottery collector, this is a standout piece: an authentic Marzi & Remy (M&R) Germany figural punch bowl with gnome finial and Rhein/Mosel castle relief decoration.
Produced in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Westerwald, this heavy stoneware punch tureen features a deep cobalt blue ground with richly hand-painted castles in high relief, framed by grape clusters and scrolling vines.
Each panel is titled with the name of a famous fortress along the Rhine and Moselle:
• Burg Eltz – Mosel
• Ehrenburg – Mosel
• Burg Cochem – Mosel
• Marksburg – Rhein
• Schloss Stolzenfels – Rhein
The lid is topped with a wonderfully modeled seated gnome (Heinzelmännchen) resting beside a basket of grapes, reinforcing the wine-punch theme. Handles are sculpted as heavy grape clusters, and the lid has a ladle notch, confirming its purpose as a punch or wine bowl rather than a standard stein or sugar.
On the underside you’ll find the impressed Marzi & Remy shield mark and the incised form number 2944, a documented castle-relief pattern used by M&R in the mid-20th century (c. 1950s–1970s).
This is an eye-catching center-piece for a beer stein, Rhine wine, or German tourism collection and not an easy form to find, especially with the original gnome lid intact.
• Height with lid: about 13
• Width handle to handle: about 12
Great vintage condition, no cracks or repairs observed.
