Rare and coveted lightweight lacquer ware bowl made in Japan.
RYUKYU Lacquer Ware..... raised cray fish.
Dates to about the 1950’s.
This bowl was very much loved and used by my mother in law.
Best displayed at eye level or higher as you want to see the crayfish.
If bowl is placed on a low table, you’ll only see the bottom of the interior or its contents.
Up to you to decide what’s important to you.
Ryukyu lacquerware uses local deigo and shitamaki trees, both finely-grained woods that are highly resistant to deformation.
Its exterior motif technique is ‘tsuikin’, where lacquer is mixed with pigments to form a paste then spread into thin layers, cut and carved according to the design and pasted directly onto the lacquered surface to create a three-dimensional effect.
Condition:
White dots are little dings of missing lacquer.
Damage on the rim has been covered up by my mother in law a long time ago.
Damage on the inside is a spot about the size of a dime where the lacquer is missing exposing the form underneath.
Old finger prints, light scratches.....
9” across by 3 5/8” tall.
Sold as found.
