There are weekends when the house in the country is less about getting away and more about remembering how civilized autumn can be. The dogs have already gone out. Coffee is somewhere behind you. You pull on your jacket and head for the old Land Rover before anyone has organized an itinerary. Hopefully it starts. This is Lauren doing what he does exceptionally well: taking the vocabulary of an English sporting jacket and giving it the swagger of a bomber. Pure wool in a small-scale brown and cream houndstooth, quietly crossed with golden-ochre windowpane. Substantial, tactile, beautifully tailored. A sharp point collar can stand rakishly against the wind; buttoned flap-and-gusset chest pockets lend field-jacket authority. Then the surprise: chocolate rib-knit cuffs and waistband draw all that proper wool into a cropped, softly bloused silhouette. Brown engraved buttons. Made in USA of imported components. Wear it with faded denim and riding boots for the morning. By lunch, cream trousers, silk scarf, loafers and a table near the windows. Nobody needs to know you dressed around the jacket. Size 4.
