Russia. When one thinks of matryoshka or babushka dolls, Russia comes to mind!
Matryoshka (little matron in Russian) originates from the female name 'Matrona,' which means 'matriarch.' Babushka is the Russian word for grandmother. The terms are often used interchangeably.
This hand painted wooden matryoshka egg is a really unique vintage decor item as it happens to feature the hammer and sickle.
The hammer and sickle is a symbol meant to represent proletarian solidarity – a union between the peasantry (pre-industrial term) and the working class. It was first adopted during the Russian Revolution, the hammer representing workers and the sickle representing the farmers. It has not been representative of Russia since the early 1990’s and it’s usage is actually illegal in some countries! This is a pretty rare find in this art form.

She really is a darling collectible and would look fabulous under a cloche or on a bookshelf.
