Antique Japanese Satsuma
Japan 19th Century
RARE ANTIQUE HISTORICAL
A Meiji period Japanese Satsuma miniature teapot Of flattened circular form, with rattan handle. The former 8 cm wide.
Satsuma porcelain of the Meiji era (1868-1912) Satsuma was the name of the domain in the south of the island of Kyushu (now Kagoshima Prefecture), famous for the production of porcelain. Porcelain production here began in the 17th century. According to legend, in 1610, the Korean master Ri San Pei discovered cocoa deposits in the south of the island of Kyushu and founded the first porcelain production workshop. Soon, hundreds of pottery workshops appeared in the neighborhood, named after the owner - Meizan, Yasuda, Kinkozan. There is a double meaning in the design of this vase. The procession of insects parodies the ancient custom of "sankin kotai", when provincial rulers were required to periodically arrive at the shogun's court to perform services. The custom was abolished in the mid-19th century.
