Early Life & Career in England
• Raised in a well-to-do family, she received formal training at Mary Linwood’s Academy in London—an elite school for the arts .
• After marrying Edmund Seymour Palmer in 1832, she launched a lithography firm in Leicester with her husband by 1841, where she crafted the artwork and he handled printing .
• Their work was well-received, particularly their Sketches of Leicestershire, but financial struggles eventually led the family to emigrate to the U.S. around 1843–1844 .
Career in the United States & Currier & Ives
• In New York, the Palmers tried various ventures including teaching art and running a print shop—until Nathaniel Currier purchased their stock and recognized Palmer’s talent .
• Between 1849 and 1868, Palmer produced around 150–200 lithographs for N. Currier, later Currier & Ives. She worked across the entire lithographic process and helped innovate technical improvements .
