The Portmeirion Botanic Garden pattern was designed by Susan Williams-Ellis in 1972, inspired by 19th-century botanical illustrations from an old book she found. The design features a collection of different flowers, each with its Latin and common name printed on the piece. The iconic pattern, which launched with 28 flowers, was groundbreaking for its time as it was one of the first dinnerware sets with different designs on each plate. It was created to evoke the feeling of an English garden when pieces were arranged on a table and has become a classic, globally recognized collection.
