In 1952, he and his family immigrated to Canada, settling first in Deloraine, Manitoba. His parents were bakers. Over time, the family moved and worked in various places; Nygård later moved to Winnipeg. Founding of the Business In 1967, using his savings and a loan, Nygård purchased a 20% stake in a women’s clothing manufacturer (Nathan Jacob / Jacob Fashions) in Winnipeg. Within a few years, he bought out the rest of the company, renamed it TanJay (or Tan-Jay Fashions), and turned his attention to broadening its reach in women’s apparel. Peak Years By the late 1980s, Nygård International had become one of Canada’s largest producers of women’s apparel. The brand was carried in many department stores across North America; had multiple product lines differentiated by market segment.
