He was principal clarinetist of the Philharmonic Orchestra and can be heard on the Toscanini recording of the Brahms Symphonies. Thurston can also be heard on Volume 1 of Historical Clarinet Recordings on the Victoria Soames Samek's Clarinet Classics CD Label. He taught at the Royal College of Music from 1930 to 1953 and wrote several books on clarinet techniques and tonality. Perhaps best remembered for his three volume set, Passage Studies for the Bb Clarinet, grouped by skill levels. For Sale is Volume 2 of Passage Studies for the Bb Clarinet. This has 17 (2 page average) clarinet solos which stretch fingering and tonality of the performer beyond the beginning level.
