POSTWAR LIONEL 128 ANIMATED NEWS STAND Vintage Sort of Works O & S Gauge
*Read: Stand thoroughly cleaned and degreased, then lubed with graphite. Some pieces repaired or replaced. The stand operates to a certain degree (see video above). It will operate on the surge voltage that always happens when you first plug it in or turn the transformer on. By 'chattering' the plug I was able to make it move. If it is just plugged straight in, it will sit there and hum. This means (most likely) that the string on the vibromotor needs to be played with to tune it in to just the right tension. After doing all the work I did, I was just too tired to mess with it any more.
-Missing parts fire hydrant, roof.
The Animated News Stand No. 128 was produced between 1957 and 1960 and relied on levers and gears to rotate the news boy, move the news attendant to the front counter, and move the dog around the fire hydrant. The operating voltage was critical to proper operation of this accessory. The Lionel Service Manual states that 11 to 13 volts should be used. If too much voltage is applied the drive line will slip its pulley and the news stand will make a chattering sound.
It is difficult to find this accessory with an original newspaper that is held in place only by friction to the boys hand. Many parts have been reproduced for the news stand.
Dimensions: 8-1/2 inches long, 6-1/4 inches deep, and 4-1/4 inches high
